August 28 Strange bug in MS Outlook 2003/2007 related to POP3 mainboxesHere is screenshot:
 And in such status it could "work" for hours. I just checked - after 1 hour of work I see message there "(402 B of 415 KB)". So for 1 hour it downloaded < 1 kb of data.
While internet is working perfect - no lags, no problems. For sure that is bug in Outlook POP3 protocol hander.
Maybe something related to AV but I tried the same with AV turned off - nothign changed.
To resolve this I need to left it running in such status for 1-2 min, then click [Cancel All] and click Send/Receive for specified POP3 box again.
If not helped - repeat again.
Strange that this problem living in MS Outlook for such long time... August 27 Installing Debian LinuxWell, this time I was able to install it and it is working fine.
Seems Debian 5.0.1 installer completely does not like when installing on a partition where other Linux was installed before.
Previous time I tried to install it on partition with Fedora Linux 9. Debian installer thinked long when looked on that partition, then suggested lot of options what to do with that partition. I choosed - delete all, create new partitions and install GRUB. But after all was installed (it took about 2 hours) nothing works! :-\
Nor a normal booting, nor a rescue mode did not lead to booting Debian Linux. After some attempts I left that tricky process.
Today I decided to try to delete old Linux partitions at all (using windows disk manager) and try to install Debian once again. And, wow, now it is installed and working fine. That is nice.
Of course, very very bad that Debian team have not included Midnight Commander into a package :-( but I downloaded latest MC from internet and installed, so now I have it.
Also there are some strange things with path to C/C++ compiler - it is not specified in the environment. But the rest of stuff seems working fine.
So, only left to install an Oracle there and I could have a good test environment for *NIX version of BTO...
Note: sometimes it could be quite convenient to have own portable working station in a pocket. At the moment I have two - one with Fedora Linux 10 and the new one with Debian Linux 5 - both installed on a separate partition at external USB HDD. Such HDD could be pluged-in almost into any computer (supporting booting from USB storage devices) and after computer restarted I have a Linux workstation with GUI and so on.
Unfortunatly, all line of Windows OSes do not support such possiblity at all. :-(

I was too optimistic about Debian Linux. :-\ That crap does not work on other computers!
So, I cannot plug in USB HDD to other computer and have working Linux station. It works only on computer where it was installed. So, it is behaving like a Windows.
Update#2: That stupid Linux GRUB fcuk up my MBR and now I cannot load Windows if USB HDD with Debian is not plugged in. :-E~
My conclusion on this - ABSOLUTELY FOR SURE FEDORA LINUX INSTALLER AND OS IS MUCH MORE INTELIGENT AND SMART THAN DEBIAN.
At least it does not damage existing configuration and keep everything working. Perhaps because RedHat Linux team is more experienced and smart than Debian team.
But using flash disks are still the big problem for both Linuxes.
Fedora able to recognize such devices but need to be rebooted while Debian seems unable to see them at all. :-(
Even not able to read NTFS. VmWare at Vista (solution found).As I wrote here - VmVare at Vista usually hang when starting VM first time after Windows started.
I have tried VmWare 1.0.7 and 1.0.8 - both have the same problem.
Today I look a bit more precisely on this. Here is screenshot of TaskManager just at the moment when I clicked [Resume VM]:
As you can see - there was a jump of memory usage and then everyting on computer did hang for 12 minutes.
Even TaskManager hang - as you can see - all 12 minutes computer was working fit to almost a single column on a chart.
I have seen some url describing similar symptoms:
Tried that suggestions but - no success.
My VM is using only 512 Mb RAM while my Vista computer has 4Gb RAM - so RAM should not be a problem... :-\
Tried memory options at menu -> Host -> Settings... - the same - no success - it still hanging on VM start/resume.
Solution
But finally problem solved by moving to VmWare Server 2.0.1.
Of course, not without a tricks - after you uninstall VmWare 1.0.x you need to cleanup all VmWare files and folders at C:\Program Files\VmWare (I mean - location where it was installed). Then - restart your computer and only after that - ok to install new VmWare.
Without cleaning up old VmWare files there could be a mess of DLLs from different VmWare versions and some VmWare components will not work in that case (at least I did experienced that case).
Seems it is not enough to do uninstall odl VmWae --> restart computer --> install new VmWare. Have to perform some cleanup for some old VmWare files. Could because of bug in installer engine...
And here you can see TaskManager at the moment when VM starting/resuming in VmWare Server 2.0.1:
 So, as you can see it starting quite smoothly - whithout memory allocation "jumps".
And the good thing - it is not hanging anymore!
But please also note:
VmWare Server 2.0.1 does not supports VmWare Server Console application (so it cannot be connected by VmWare Server Console).
It is completely rely on a web-based interface.
To see the VM console you need to use speial web browser plugin, but that is ok as for me. Ya, it is a bit not convenent but it works fine.
I have found install package at C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\tomcat\webapps\ui\plugin\vmware-vmrc-win32-x86.exe. It takes 21Mb.
After installing it appears at C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\VMware Remote Console Plug-in.
Not sure if I can just start vmware-vmrc.exe from that location and what parameters to supply.
At TaskInfo I see that vmware-vmrc.exe started as
vmware-vmrc.exe -h uawsdbo-vista:8333 -p 371D3A1B-2807-4CD9-8DF0-186C0E86A5DD -M "32"
but have no idea what it means. I tried to put the same to a command line but it did fail.
So, seems it will be difficult to create shortcuts to a VM console. Have to start it from web interafce only... :-\
August 26 Oh... stupid thing in Windows Vista againHm... I was trying to load some sources from main computer (under Vista) to the VM (under Windows 2003 server).
But the command:
cd \\MyComputer
did not work at all!
I tried lot of options, played with network settings and so on - had no effect. :-(
All the time it reported
"MyComputer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." Finally I started to suspect some trick here. So, I tried this command:
and found - it works fine!
And finally can do do "cd .." and appears at the \\MyComputer level, so it is not clear - why Windows unable to access it...
Maybe it is a feature (not a bug) but it should be obviously configured somewhere at Windows.
Otherwise it looks very stupid. August 25 O&O Defrag - напоминает историю про Ходжу НасрединаБыла такая история - совсем стало туго Ходже Насредину и пошел он на базар продавать порошок от крыс.
На вопрос - "а как же применять ваш порошок?" он отвечал - "поймайте крысу, хорошенько стукните ее об пол и засыпьте порошок ей в нос".
Вот и с O&O Defrag очень похожая история. Программа не хочет дефрагментировать большой файл (файл = 3.5Gb, а свободно на диске = 9Gb) .
Написал в support - че мол за фигня?! Отвечают - что бы дефрагментировать такой большой файл у вас на диске должен быть непрерывный кусок свободного места размером чуть больше чем файл... Пилят!... :-\ 20 баксов выброшенны на ветер.
Видимо ребятам из O&O очень нужны деньги, вот они и пристали на использование тупого и ограниченного Windows defragementation API - быстренько слепили "поделку" и на рынок продавать. :-(((
А что же ребята из microsoft? Они вообще хоть когда-нибудь пофиксать свой кривой API собираються или нет?!
Update: Хотя, я не уверен на 100% что проблема именно в кривом API от microsoft. Ориентируюсь по статье которую когда-то читал по этой теме. Очень может быть что это у ребят из O&O "кривые" руки. Canon digital cameras comparison - PowerShots A710IS and G10I got a chance to compare 2 digitial cameras from Canon - PowerShot G10 and A710IS.
G10 is a new model from Canon.
A710IS is quite old one (~2-3 years).
First test case was like this:
So, idea is - to make camera seeing exactly the full 1 meter ruller and then check how it recognize some textual info at the center. And here are results:
So, G10 has better optic and resolution. That is of course is obvious from a camera price but now we can see it visually... Note: on the shot made by G10 small text is still not so readable but at least we can make a guess what it could be, while on A710 shot even big text difficult to read. Я так подозреваю что видимо они как-то хитро оптимизируют пространство на диске что бы одинаковые файлы не занимали место... но с другой стороны - ну не может же там быть одинаковых файлов на +8 Gb ... Ж) Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 - complete crap!Do not buy that crap software!
That is essentially worse than standard windows Disk Management but also could crash computer to BSOD. :-(
I did hope it could fix partitions on my flash disk but as discovered it cannot...

 Кстати, а зачем его не ставить? Я ж тогда получается не въехал в Украину... в чем тут прикол?... August 15 Bootable flash memory stick!Once a friend asked me for help with his laptop. He has some problems with WinXP installed there and wanted to reinstall but laptop did not have a CD-drive. So the only option - was a USB flash memory stick. Or USB HDD but he did not have such device. So I started to search for variants - how to make USB memory stick bootable, so we can put there WinXp install package, boot laptop from USB flash memory stick, format all and then install WinXP.
That was a nightmare - I dig a lot of internet resources about this topic, tried lot of different variants - approaches and software... but without any success. :-( The maximum I could do - create a 1.44Mb bootable partition on a flash memoty stick. But it is very stupid - because it did allow only a single 1.44mb partition on a flash memory stick and of course that cannot fit WinXP install package.
That time we solved problems in other way - I have used DrWeb CureIt to cure all viruses my friend got on his latop and it started to work fine. So it was no more required to reinstall it from scratch.
But problem with bootable flash memory stick was solved a month after that in very simple way. I was downloading updates for my DELL laptop and found - there is a DELL Diagnostic utility which allows to make bootable any partition on a flash memory stick. So, I have created a bootable partition on my flash memory stick - just for such cases when need to help somebody reinstall system on laptops without CD-drive.
Note: buying an external CD drive for a laptop is absolutely is not an option here. Because it is expensive, not easy to find where to buy and in general it is not too convenient as flash memory stick. И хотя я к металоконструкциям не имею отношения, но прямо какая-то приемственность поколений получается... Ж-)
August 10 Команда IBM DB2 - полные... редиски! :-\Пилят!!!!
Уже 9-с-половиной версия DB2! И ДО СИХ ПОР никакая ... в IBM не догадалать поставить русскую Windows и проверить - как оно на ней работает?!
А оно, сцуко, нифига не работает!!!
Горе-программисты в IBM не в состоянии корректно выбрать кодовую страницу в своих утилитах!
В итоге оно выглядит вот так:

PS. Я понимаю что я немного "гоню", но, блин, из версии-в-версию, с 2002 года (раньше видимо тоже было, но с DB2 я работаю с 2002го) одни и те же дурацкие "грабли" - ПОРА БЫ УЖЕ ПОФИКСАТЬ!
